At the origin of this special place stood
initially only the Kanzele Muehle. For centuries, it was driven by the water of the Mühlwaal of Lazag and was an important part of rural life in Obermais. Long before the villa was built, the mill shaped this place with its strength, consistency, and proximity to nature.
Only in 1865 were the mill and villa first mentioned in documents as a unit. In this year, the Hamburg merchant Hermann Krogmann acquired the then already decommissioned Kanzele Muehle with the adjacent wine field. On this property, he had the current Rosengarten built: a villa in the Swiss style and gave it the name "Hermannshöhe".
After Krogmann's death in 1885,
his sons sold the estate to the Russian landowner Leonard von Malinowski, who gave the villa the name Villa Speranza. Already a year later, the house passed into the possession of Maria Baronin von Weisz-Horstenstein. She had the villa expanded by a lateral west wing and made it a place of elevated hospitality. Among her guests was, among others, Duchess Maria Antonina of Parma.
In 1906, the married couple Weinhart took over Villa Speranza and operated it together with surrounding houses as a pension business. After the First World War, the estate passed into the possession of the Obermais honorary citizen Ignaz Gritsch, who shaped it until 1954.
A new, shaping chapter began in 1957,
when the then 32-year-old Aloisia Egger acquired the villa. Inspired by the blooming garden in front of the house, she gave it the name Rosengarten. The Hotel-Restaurant Rosengarten developed into a respected house of the burgeoning tourism - until the death of Frau Egger in 2015.
Today, the over 150-year-old Villa Rosengarten, which is under ensemble protection, is owned by Gerda Ladurner and her family. With great care, the historic building was comprehensively renovated and combines modern comfort with the charm of bygone times.
Gerda Ladurner runs the house together with her husband Ossi and the two children into a lively future. In a family atmosphere and with great attention to detail, the tradition of hospitality is revived here.
